Photographing Jamaica Kincaid for Le Monde: A Portrait Session in Bennington, Vermont
This August, I had the privilege of photographing acclaimed writer Jamaica Kincaid at her home in Bennington, Vermont for the prestigious French newspaper Le Monde. As an editorial and portrait photographer based in Vermont, assignments like these remind me why I love what I do.

The assignment came through photo editor Sandra Grangeray, and what could have been a standard portrait session became something much more memorable. Jamaica graciously welcomed me into her stunning gardens, which provided a naturally beautiful backdrop for our photography session.
As both a photographer and gardener myself, I was thrilled to explore Jamaica’s remarkable gardens. We compared notes about our Vermont growing seasons, discovering that both our gardens were running about three weeks behind compared to this time last year. It’s these authentic moments of connection that often make for the most genuine portrait photography.

Beyond the camera lens, Jamaica and I, along with her assistant Zena, shared a meaningful conversation about the experience of aging as women. These deeper discussions bring authenticity and depth to editorial portrait work, creating images that capture not just a person’s appearance, but their essence.

Working with international publications like Le Monde allows me to bring Vermont stories to a global audience. This assignment represents the type of editorial and portrait photography work I’m passionate about: emotionally engaging, visually compelling, and deeply human.
